FORMER EAGLES EMPLOYEE IS “RETARDED”

Posted by David Foley On March - 9 - 2009

This was in the running for Wednesday’s Worst, but I couldn’t wait that long to give my take on this ridiculous story.

Here’s the not-so-brief synopsis, and here’s my version: Seasonal Eagles employee gets canned for criticizing the team on his facebook status. What he said to get the axe? “”Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver … Dam Eagles R Retarted!!”

First things first, any man who can’t properly spell “damn” or “retarded” and replaces “are” with “R” loses his right to question anyone else’s intelligence.

Look, John Gonzalez can bring you the full sob story behind Dan Leone’s life but that doesn’t mean shit in this situation. The man ripped his employer on a publicly-accessible site and deserved to lose his job. What would happen if I came on here and called my boss a “retard” (or a “retart”?) That’s right, I’d probably get fired too (and made fun of for my sheer stupidity.)

Why then has this story gotten national attention? I just heard two sports talk show hosts discussing it out here in Los Angeles! An ESPN poll on the story has nearly 80% of around 75,000 votes (as of 4 pm Monday) siding with Leone. Just another reminder that the majority isn’t necessarily right (or rational, in this case.)

Every single day good, hardworking people are losing their jobs simply because their employer couldn’t afford to pay them…don’t waste your pity on this man…

Dan LeoneSeriously Dan? You’re really going to pose with the keyboard like that? Don’t forget the tissues and the fake arm cast!!

I respect the fact that you worked for the team for six years and have been a lifelong fan, but what you need to realize is that football is a business just like anything else. And in the business world calling your employer (or in this case) your team “retarded” IS GOING TO GET YOU FIRED! Take that keyboard and smack yourself in the face with it repeatedly (or better yet, let ME do it) because you only have yourself to blame for this! Learn your goddamn lesson, stop trying to make this a bigger story than it is, AND SHUT THE HELL UP YOU MOPEY NIMROD!!

That is all.

Gotta give credit where credit is due…that horribly over-dramatized photo of Leone comes courtesy of Michael Bryant and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

I feel bad making fun, but this douchebag deserved to lose his job. He called out his employer and they found out. It’s the same as saying it to the front office basically.

If I were the Eagles, I would have canned his ass too.

The Eagles can be ripped for some stupid things this offseason, but this is not one of them.

    Amen to that Kieran!

    Thirded.

Foley, you are an idiot and so are your fans. You write like some Philly punk wannabe who can’t find anything germane to write about sports, so you dump on a handicapped person. You don’t know anything about this guy, but anyone who has to work from a wheelchair in a football stadium deserves a helluva lot more rrespect than some coward hiding behind a keyboard.

“IS GOING TO GET YOUR FIRED”

Glad that the guy who wrote this, who was so critical of spelling, proof-read his work at least once.

Haha thanks for the heads up Timmy. Believe it or not I do proofread my work, but evidently that doesn’t apply to sentences that are all in caps.

As for you Jack, you are certainly entitled to that opinion but you criticize me for not knowing Leone when you don’t either. What if Dan had a series of incidents and this was just the one that forced the Eagles hand?

Also I feel I need to remind you that Leone was physically-handicapped, not mentally-handicapped…he should have known better.

Hi David, just noticed that PhinallyPhilly was following me on Twitter (https://twitter.com/steveolenski) and I was glad for the new follower and I reciprocated and started following this site.

However after reading this article penned by you, I immediately checked the Unfollow button.

First and foremost, I am all for free speech, so let’s get that out of the way. And I am also one prone to exercising my right to voice my opinion.

BUT what you did in this column was downright despicable and deplorable. To make light of one’s handicap and to spew such vile vitriol and to use such defaming language is quite frankly, repugnant.

What’s truly sad is your hurtful and very personal words you use only hurt you…

This whole situation is yet another example of why the Internet is a dangerous place. Anyone can have a forum and present themselves under the guise of writer/journalist/etc.

ALL you did was give Eagles fans, REAL Eagles fans who are passionate and compassionate a black eye but something tells me you don’t care.

    Keep up the good work.

    Sincerely,.
    Steve O

    Hey Steve,

Sorry you feel that way, but if you are more disgusted with me than with Dan Leone you’re not my intended audience and you won’t like my work.

I just want to point out I NEVER made fun of Dan for his disability, I made fun of him for being an attention whore who can’t spell…you evidently didn’t get the point of my post.

Thanks for the comment either way.

    David,

As previously stated, I agree with you.

But, this sentence may make people think you are actually making fun of the person.

“Oh, AND LEARN TO SPELL, RETARD!!!”

It would help to take out the comma in there. Then it makes it more obvious that you’re telling the person who got fired that he needs to learn how to spell.

Fair enough Kieran, I took out the sentence entirely. It’s redundant anyway. I also fixed the link so that it point to the actual story, not that lame picture.

It cracks me up though that people are getting offended as if Leone is mentally handicapped and I’m making fun of him for that, when he actually isn’t at all (It’s a physical issue, people.) Regardless, this has nothing to do with his physical ailments and people who try to make this story about that are missing the entire point…that he deservedly got fired for publicly criticizing his employer.

  • Chris Shafer

Alright this arguing has to stop. What the guy did was wrong. Everyone feels sorry for him out of media speculation. He’s not a member of the press or someone who can give their opinions so freely…he is a member of the Eagle’s organization. However low on the latter he may have been he still represented the Philadelphia Eagles. Professional organizations must remain professional. That’s the whole point.

  • http://www.phinallyphilly.com/ David Foley

I don’t think anyone is necessarily arguing here.

The point of contention is whether what the Eagles did was justifiable, and I can’t see how it wasn’t. If I ran a team I am entirely within my right to fire an employee that criticizes the organization I run. Would I want that kind if negativity around my work environment?

Dan Leone has free speech, but he also needs to realize that there are consequences that can come from that. The only person who was unprofessional here was Leone, and if he really wanted his job back that bad he would have been better served to keep his mouth shut and talk to team officials privately.
