SHOULD THE PHILS MOVE UTLEY TO THIRD?

Posted by David Foley On March - 14 - 2009

With Chase Utley officially back in action for the Phillies it may be time for the organization to make a big decision about the 30-year old star’s future.

Should the Phils move Chase to third base?

Baseball Prospectus raises this issue in an article for ESPN.com (you’ll need Insider to read it) but for convenience’s sake I’ll paraphrase their argument right here…

Third is an easier position on the body defensively than second and with Utley entering his 30′s (and coming off an injury) we may see his defense start to decline. Ultimately they conclude that this might be something that happens down the line, but not this season.

My question is: why not make the move now? Utley would be an instant offensive improvement over Pedro Feliz and at least comparable defensively. Even more importantly moving Chase to third would open up a spot for top prospect Jason Donald at second, which may not be a bad idea given the fact that Donald is clearly ready for his shot at the majors.

If it doesn’t work out then Chase can just be moved back to second and Feliz can start again at third, but why not take a shot and see if it works? It seems like a low-risk high-reward move that could not only give Donald a chance to prove himself but also add years to Utley’s career.

To me it doesn’t make sense to move Utley over to third especially now. He is just recovering over a major injury and now you want him to adjust to a position he hasn’t played since his time in the minors. Also to mention Jason Donald hasn’t played 2b that much (his natural position has been shortstop). I think the most likely scenario is Utley continues his career at 2nd base and next year Jason Donald gets an opportunity to be the 3rd baseman since Feliz is a free agent after this season.

All good points Evan, but we need to find some way to get Donald in the lineup. As of now he’ll just be insurance in case anyone gets hurt (which hopefully doesn’t happen.)

yeah i definitely agree that Donald has a bright future, and hopefully that future is here. He is most likley best suited to play most of the year at Triple A so he can play everyday. I wouldn’t want him sitting on the bench as just a pinch hitter cause I think that could regress his development as a hitter.

Chase played third in 2002 for Scranton-Wilkes Barre and was pretty putrid. He had a .918 fielding percentage (Feliz has a .971 career average). He did have a range factor of 2.5 which is close to Feliz’s career factor of 2.7, but he’s still only going to get 9/10 balls he gets. I think he stays at second until Howard’s contract runs out and they move him to first for the end of his career.

I say we bring Donald up and give him a shot at third, I get that not getting innings couldn’t help him, but he could do well at third, and possibly better than Feliz.
