Coste Guard will still be protecting the Bank

Posted by Kieran Kelly On March - 26 - 2009

The Phillies are shopping Ronnie Paulino, according to Phillies.com

That’s great news for former 33 year old rookie Chris Coste, who seems to be assured of keeping his backup catcher spot with this news.

I always though Coste would stick around, but was a little worried when Paulino started off the spring on a hot streak. He’s cooled down considerably and it seems the Phillies are now content with keeping Coste around.

They could have sent Paulino to the minors, but with Lou Marson down there, Paulino gets better value as trade bait.

One of the comments from that Phillies.com article made me laugh.  ”Commenter” wrote:

I heard from a baseball source with clubhouse access that Coste kept throwing empty TastyKake wrappers into Paulino’s locker.

Obviously a lie, but with Paulino’s weight issues in Pittsburgh, it’s pretty funny. Plus, Coste would never do something like that, just not in his nature.

Overall, good news to see Coste will still be in pinstripes this season.
