Joe the Pitcher or Redneck Recking Crew?

Posted by Kieran Kelly On March - 30 - 2009

127803CF-EDC0-4C10-8828-9E43F2828B46.jpgTodd Zolecki reports today that Cole Hamels has been officially ruled out for Opening Night.

Pitching coach Rich Dubee has said that the Opening Night starter will be either Joe Blanton or Brett Myers. Jamie Moyer has been ruled out.

Here’s how the rotation shapes out for the first week:

April 5 vs. Atlanta: Myers or Blanton
April 7 vs. Atlanta: Jamie MoyerC30895CA-C784-4BAF-A3A4-4F87B1E4B54A.jpg
April 8 vs. Atlanta: Myers or Blanton
April 10 at Colorado: Hamels

I’d like for Myers to get the start for the 3rd straight year, but Blanton has been pitching extremely well this spring, so either way, they’ll be trotting out a pretty good pitcher for Opening Night.

I’d rather the ace of the staff start out the season, but in the long run, it’s better for Hamels to be prepared for the long run rather than rush him out there for one start.

I agree let’s go with Myers, followed by Moyer and Blanton.

I agree with what you said in that panel discussion the other day Kieran: I could see the top end of our rotation making or breaking this team.

Can Hamels stay healthy? Can Myers recapture his second half self from last season? Can Blanton regain the form from when he was the #1/#2 in Oakland? Can Moyer stay ageless?

All big question marks in my book.

I still think the Phillies playoff chances hang on the ability of the starting rotation to perform like it did last season.

-Hamels needs to get healthy and stay healthy.
    - Myers needs to be the pitcher he was in the second half, not the mess of the first half.
-Blanton was a beast for the Phillies last season, he needs to continue that.
-Moyer needs to continue to defy Father Time.
-Happ/Park needs to just make some quality starts and let the offense/defense win the game.
