Apparently, it only took 17 minutes into the 2009 season for the Phillies to get booed. I’m surprised it took that long.
The booing also ignited a big discussion on our Facebook page.
There was a Philly.com story a few weeks ago that argued that the Phillies should be exempted from getting booed this season.
My opinion? 2008 was last year. If the 2009 Phillies don’t perform, they deserve to be told. In Philly, that means booing.
The Phils won the World Series and we fans let them know that we appreciated them by flooding Broad Street on that glorious October day. We don’t need to protect their egos this season by not booing them. That’s not how we roll in Philly.
Brett Myers made mistakes in the game last night and he deserved to be told about it. These are grown men making millions of dollars to play a game. They can handle being booed.
We don’t need to take it easy on the players this year. The second Myers threw that first pitch, 2008 was over. These Phillies haven’t done anything yet. They need to win to keep the good feelings towards them going.
I still cringe every time I hear someone say that Philly fans booed Santa Claus. Get over it. The drunk asshole deserved to be booed.
Recycling a statement I made in an earlier post:
Cheesesteaks and booing, it’s what Philly does.
