Can you imagine the scene of the NHL Winter Classic right here in Philadelphia on January 1st 2010? Can you imagine a stadium filled with thousands of crazy Philadelphians decked out in orange to support the Flyers? Can you imagine the atmosphere, the commotion, the noise, the energy? I certainly can. While everyone continues to argue over whether or not the Linc or even Happy Valley are suitable environments for the Winter Classic there are countless supporters of the orange and black waiting anxiously, nervously for any word that one of the greatest new NHL traditions would be visiting their city, myself being one of them.
Well according to the twitter of Flyers’ beat writer Anthony SanFilippo, the Flyers are one of two finalists to play in the NHL’s 2010 Winter Classic. The other finalist: the Washington Capitals. The home team: the Boston Bruins.
Now hold the phone. I know what you’re all thinking: “The home of Jack Edwards, and his homer fanbase? Wtf?” I know that because that’s immediately what I thought. The game would be played at Fenway Park, and though it basically stabs the heart of every Flyers fan hoping for the Winter Classic to actually come to Philadelphia in the next 2 decades it does mean we’re going to one. I know that’s not exactly a very good consolation. My thinking: “What for? So we can watch us get jerked around by biased refs under thousands of ‘fans’ from an inferior fanbase?” Yeah, I’m not too happy about it not being in Philadelphia, but hey, if we do beat out Washington and get to go to the 2010 Winter Classic who is up for a road trip?
Phinally Philly trip to Boston on New Year’s? We’ll just have to show them what real fans are.
