Slimmer Myers works better in thin air

The new fat-free version of Brett Myers gave up 4 hits, with three of them being longballs, in seven innings. He looked a lot better in this game than he did in the season opener on Sunday. This is the Myers that the Phillies are going to need this season. He was incredible down the stretch last season and the team needs that this season as well.

Ryan Howard finally got his bat going with a bases clearing double and Raul Ibanez kept the HR power going with another shot last night.

Jayson Werth kept his name at the front of the list for offensive MVP of this season with a triple in the 5th. Werth is a very underrated player and he’s going to come up huge for this team this season.

Today’s game pits Chan Ho Park against Aaron Cook in Park’s Phillies debut. I’m very interested to see if Park can be as impressive as he was in Spring Training. J.A. Happ has looked very good in relief so far this season, so he’s not backing down. Park is going to have to pitch well in order to keep his spot, as it should be.

Old news to most of you at this point, but Carlos Ruiz has been placed on the 15 day DL with an oblique strain. This means that Lou Marson has been called up from Lehigh Valley to share the catching duties with Chris Coste, who made an unbelievable Pete Rose-Bob Boone impression all by himself yesterday. Marson was sent down so he gets regular playing time, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get at least a few starts during Ruiz’s time on the DL. I’m a huge Coste fan, so I love seeing him on the field. I hope he gets a lot of PT the next two weeks.
