A Special Preemptive Edition of Wednesday’s Worst

Posted by David Foley On April - 15 - 2009

Typically Wednesday’s Worst is about someone who screws up, ideally in an utterly humiliating way. In the case of Milton Bradley it’s fair to say his entire career has been one, big screw up.

There was the fight with a fan in LA, the near-fight with a broadcaster in Texas, the injury in San Diego as he was being restrained by his own manager…the guy is a living, breathing Sportscenter Not Top 10 list. Everytime Milton ends up with a new team I anxiously await his next incredible act of self-destruction.

Now Milton is tempting fate by coming out publically and poking the Wrigley Field boo-birds with a sharp stick. Not a smart thing to do when you have a target on your back everywhere you go.

The real reason I brought this up was though was to share my personal run-in with Milton here on this blog. It was a couple seasons ago when Bradley had just joined the Padres. The day was July 22, 2007.

This game was notable mainly because J.D. Durbin (remember him?!?) pitched his first career shutout in a 9-0 Phils win (outdueling Jake Peavy in the process.) I was with my family all decked out in Phils gear and we had great seats right on the left field line wall.

Bradley had been getting booed by the Padres fans behind him all game long, so when he came over by me to make a catch in foul ground he was probably already in a bad mood. As he neared me to make the grab I, as any self-respecting fan should do, tried to get him to drop the pop up. “DROP IT MILTON!” was along the lines of what I yelled. He made the catch and I turned around to sit down.

All of a sudden the Padres fans in my section (who were all fantastic, polite people by the way) started laughing hysterically. Evidently right after I turned around Milton mouthed at me to “Shut the hell up” and proceeded to stare me down for a good few seconds before returning to his place in left. I had no clue any of this happened of course, otherwise I may have had something not-so-nice to say back.

That experience taught me first hand that Milton Bradley will never change: he will always be a miserable, short-tempered punk regardless of the color of the uniform he is wearing.

Congratulations on being named Wednesday’s Worst Milton, it isn’t the first time and surely won’t be the last.

DISHONORABLE MENTION:

Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana – Way to call out your teammate after a recent 2-1 loss, Johan. Daniel Murphy may have made the error, but keep in mind it was the RBI single you gave up to the next batter that really cost your team the game. Considering you guys have choked away the division the last few seasons maybe you should consider keeping the finger-pointing to a minimum?

Enjoy the start of the NHL playoffs tonight, and GO FLYERS!
