Wednesday’s Worst: Of Course the NHL ISN’T Rigged Edition

Posted by David Foley On April - 29 - 2009

Congratulations Commissioner Bettman, you got what you wanted all along…a Cindy Crybaby/Alex Ovechkin playoff matchup. And to think this happened with no league interference whatsoever!

It’s not like a team with Henrik Lundquist in goal dropped three straight to a fearsome goalie tandem of Jose Theodore and Simeon Varlamov.

It’s not like the best goalie in NHL history gave up two goals in the last two minutes of a Game 7 at home to help the freakin’ Hurricanes advance.

It’s not like the officiating wasn’t horribly one-sided for a large part of the Flyers-Pens series.

bettmanOh, wait. Nevermind.

I mean, there’s no possible way a sports league could ever pull something like this off. Incompetent officiating is one thing, but actually making it so one team would face another to help generate interest for the NHL playoffs is just something that would never happen.

I mean, you really think ESPN will spend any time at all talking about a Cindy Crosby – Alexander Ovechkin playoff battle?!? Why would they? The NHL didn’t force feed this “rivalry” down our throats so why should the Worldwide Leader?

Either way this Caps-Pens series will be good for the league and it sure should be fun to watch…all this conspiracy talk is just flat out preposterous!

bettmansbedroomIt’s not like the Commish has a poster of Cindy Crosby in his bedroom or anything!

Oh, wait. Nevermind.

It was the refs…that’s the reason you guys lost 4 games to 2. It had nothing to do with the fact that you guys were a far inferior team. You truly are a homer, blinded by a ridiculous bias that won’t even let you see any light of truth!

Foley Fact: Philadelphia was outpenalized 116 PIMs to 90 PIMs in the First Round (a ratio of 1.29:1).

Foley Forgot: Over the course of 82 regular season games, Philadelphia was penalized a league leading 1434 PIMs to Pittsburgh’s 1114 (a ratio of the SAME 1.29:1).

Conclusion (we all know the blind can’t see this): Philly and Pittsburgh were penalized the exact amount as should have been statistically expected based on their proportional amount of penalties in the regular season.

Hey, Stally, how about this for a Foley Fact:

Go rewatch the officials hand game 2 to the Pens or handcuff the Flyers in game 4. It’s not how many penalties the Flyers took…it’s how many the Pens didn’t take. There were missed on both sides, but when 90% of the Flyers penalties were iffy and 90% of the Penguins were blatant you start to wonder…

stally, we are allowed to vent a little frustration. the call against carter in game 2 was pretty bad at that juncture of the game. but what hurts the most is losing to a team with such little heart. the flyers didnt finish their opportunities. dont expect the same from washington. the pens are in for a rude awakening.

and i love it. go caps.

What still surprises me is that Bettman almost killed off the NBA some 15 years ago, and he still is the comish over our sport. What the hell doesn’t the owners see, and when are they going to wake up??

Regardless of questionable calls here and there, the Flyers must’ve been in on the conspiracy. Going 0-for-8 on the power play? Inexcusable. Allowing the Penguins to come back down 3-0? Inexcusable.

I don’t care what calls the officials made or didn’t make. The Flyers still had every opportunity to win. And there’s no reason to blame the league their inability to take advantage of those opportunities.

I’m looking forward to next season. We have an incredibly talented team. They just need to put it all together.
