So, How Would YOU Fix the Sixers?

Posted by Mike Santa Barbara On May - 7 - 2009

I asked you the fan to tell us here at PhinallyPhilly.com how you would fix the Sixers. And as usual you guys showed up. While most responses were sarcastic, they were through and through Philly, they had passion. They showed how frustrated some Sixer fans are, here are a few of the responses and my comments on them:

Comments from our Facebook page:

“Get rid of Dalembert and Green and hire Avery Johnson”

-Justin Allen

Well Justin I agree with you for the most part. I can’t imagine the Sixers won’t do everything they can to try and get rid of Sammy. As for Willie Green I think he’s a good player, but he just has too much to do. His role is too large, he’s more effective in short bursts off the bench. When it comes to brining in a new head coach I don’t think Avery Johnson really fits this team, his coaching style just doesn’t work for me.

” Sammy D has got to go. I hate to say it but he’s never materialized into what we had hoped he would. Reggie Evans gave us better time at the Center spot than Sam. Keeping the young core can’t be a bad idea though. A.I., Thad, Speights and Lou are a good group of guys to work around. They are young and extremely athletic and willing to learn which is hard to find nowadays in the NBA. Hopefully Elton can get healthy and stay healthy and learn how to run the floor a little bit more to fit into the offense.”

- Joseph Sterchele

Joe, I agree with all your points but you don’t have to “hate to say,” that Sammy hasn’t developed. It’s been his fault he hasn’t become what everyone thought, except for maybe Billy King, however he has no one to blame but himself. He didn’t work hard, he looks like a guy happy to have a pay check and has never seemed to take the steps necessary to become at least an above average player at best. As for Elton Brand I believe having a better option at center will really have an effect on his game. Brand can run the floor a bit , not as much as the guys you mentioned of course but having a guy who can play some half court Basketball is important as well. When you run into teams like the Magic in the playoffs you have to show you can play that half court style when your pushed into it.

“I think they need an overhaul, they have no toughness on the team”

-Dan J. Blessing

Dan, it’s gonna be ok, let’s not overreact here.  As Joseph mentioned they have a good young core. Guys like Speights and Young have showed some toughness, and Iguodala has really transformed his play and become a leader. The pieces are there, they just need something to put them all together. First a coach to run some sort of an offensive system, then a Center and a 2 guard that can shoot the lights out. Seems like wishful thinking but what else do we got?

Ok, thanks to everyone who commented on Facebook.com, and to all of you who continue to follow us there.

Now some comments left on PhinallyPhilly.com:

“Send them to Seattle?”

-Vandal

Well I’m almost certain the Storm need someone at Center. What do you think we could get for Sammy?

“Throw Samuel Dalembert off the the Betsy Ross Bridge.”

-Matt

I’d imagine this would cause a whole new set of problems. Legal ones.

Now an E-Mail I received:

“I like the whole Miller/Iguodala thing they got going on. (Actually forgot about Brand) Maybe sit tight this year and go after Yao next summer. “

-Jonathan Haskell

Andre Miller may be a great player but the Sixers may be wise to let him walk. He’s not exactly young and he is a liability on the defensive end of the floor. It may be better to bring in a younger replacement that’s going to be here for the long hall. As for Yao he has an ETO option for the last year of his contract. Which I believe he optioned, so that would make him a unrestricted free agent after the 2010-2011 season. However, I can’t see him leaving Houston and the Sixers wouldn’t have the cap room to even begin to dream of signing him.

Thanks to everyone who sent in their comments. Keep an eye out for my Sixer solutions, and my NBA Draft preview, mock draft included.
