Welcome to Philly Jason
Now that we’ve had a few days to let this “blockbuster” deal sink in it’s time to grade this trade.
It case you missed it the Sixers traded big man Reggie Evans to Toronto for three point specialist Jason Kapono.
From a scoring perspective this deal is a steal for the Sixers. Evans rarely offered much in the way of offense, and Kapono is consistently one of the better three point shooters in the league.
Three point shooting, remember that?
It’s something I had harped on throughout the regular season and again in the playoffs. The Sixers inability to shoot the three pointer consistently really cost them. In one of the losses to the Magic in the first round of the NBA playoffs the Magic and Sixers both shot nearly the same percentage for the game. The only difference between the two teams was three pointers attempted and made.
How many times did you find yourself day dreaming of having Kyle Korver back?
Now the Sixers will have to take on some money in the deal but they’ll gladly trade that for the value Kapono brings. We’re talking about the best statistically speaking three point shooter of all-time. With Eddie Jordan’s new system being implemented the idea will be to give a guy like Kapono plenty of open looks. Also Evans being traded will allow a guy like Marreese Speights to slide into his spot, also more minutes for Jason Smith who will be returning from an injury that kept him out all of last season.
So if I had to give this trade a grade I’d give it an A+ without blinking, however the Sixers should not be finished. There are still more holes to fill, especially at point-guard. What goods a great shooter if there isn’t anyone out there to feed him the ball?
So my grade is a B+, of course the Sixers still have some extra credit assignments to finish which could allow that grade to be bumped up a little.
