Pause the countdown to Madson as closer

2260F117-2D0C-4BF2-A6D8-6683871CB01F.jpgWIth Brad Lidge on the DL for the next few weeks, Ryan Madson has assumed the closer’s role for the Fightins’. Many people had been calling for this move since Lidge blew those two saves against the Yankees and those cries only got louder after the Dodgers series.

Madson has gotten two saves against the Mets since he was anointed the closer this week. He has pitched extremely well in those two appearances and has looked like he has all the stuff needed to be a top line closer. The problem is that Madson has struggled in the past when being shuffled between roles. He struggled a few seasons ago when he was rotating between being a starter and a reliever and he has grown into his role as a top setup man. Madson has said that he wants to be the best setup man in the majors because that’s his role. If his role were to change in the middle of the season for an extended period of time, he could struggle. He’ll be fine for a short period, but he has flourished in the setup role and he should go back there when Lidge comes off the DL

The biggest criticism I have over the past few weeks has been the Philadelphia sports fans attitude towards Brad Lidge. He struggled a bit recently and people were calling for his head. I think some of us were spoiled by his perfect season last year. I hate to say it, but this is an extreme case of “What have you done for me lately?” Lidge will be fine. Everyone runs into some trouble at times. Lidge is this team’s closer and will be for the foreseeable future.

Disagree? Let me know why.

completely agree. people need to realize that last year was last year and it's nearly impossible to be perfect. last season was special for everyone on that team, especially lidge. however, everyone needs to get over it. it's a new year with new circumstances and nobody is perfect. the way i see it, lidge is just making up for lost time with some blowns saves here and there. he's still a top of the line closer and last time i checked, the phils still had the 2nd best record in the major leagues. to all the people that aren't happy unless they're complaining about something…GET OVER IT

I agree. We were spoiled last year with Lidge being perfect. Even the top closers in the game blow a few saves a season. Lidge is just getting them out in the beginning of the year.

Madson sure looks like he could be the closer of the future, but for the time being, we still have Lidge. He is dominant when he is healthy, so hopefully this DL stint gets him back to where he needs to be.

Philly is notorious for this. Just look at McNabb. He's quite possibly the greatest QB in franchise history, but people were ready to run him out of town and go with Kolb last year. I never want to see Kolb on the field. I just don't think he's an NFL QB.

Lidge will be fine, Madson will be the ultimate setup man. Phillies are back to back WFC. You read it here first.
