Some Saturday Linkage, and the Foul Ball I ALMOST One-Handed

Posted by David Foley On June - 20 - 2009

Petco ParkLast night I was at the Padres-A’s game with a bunch of family members sitting in the lower level on the first base side. As we got to our seats in the bottom of the first a Padre (might have been Tony Gwynn Jr.) hit a foul ball right at me. My aunt yelled, “DAVID!” I look up and it is literally heading straight at me. No one else even had a play on it.

At this point I still had my iPhone in my left hand, so I reached up with my right and tried to one-hand it. Catching a foul ball is a heck of a lot harder than it looks though and it bounced right off my hand and started rolling around at my feet. I dove down and tried to grab it but it spun out of my reach and below the seat in front of me, where a little boy promptly snatched it up.

I have no screen-grabs of this…as a matter of fact I’m not even sure I made it on the broadcast of the game, but I’m still upset about it. I mean, if I managed to bare-hand that ball that would have been Sportscenter Top 10 material easily, but I had at least two shots and grabbing it at my feet and I just couldn’t haul it in.

I’m not sure how many chances you get like that to catch a foulball in your lifetime, but I’m going to have a hard time living that one down. At least until I (hopefully) get a second chance.

Some other observations from the ballgame, and some Saturday Links after the jump…

- I was excited to see Josh Outman pitch, one of the prospects the Phils traded to Oakland in the Joe Blanton deal. Unfortunately Outman left the game after just 1 and 2/3 innings with shoulder tightness. Bummer.

- There was an announced crowd of 20,000 or so at the game but the ballpark was not even close to half-full. Lots of A’s fans were there, which was surprising. It’s a shame too because Petco Park is such a terrific venue, but the team is so bad no one is ever there.

- A bit later in the game another foul ball landed about three seats over from me and almost hit my Aunt’s brother in the head. I almost got a chance at redemption right there!

At leas you caught it! Haha
  • Don't fret man a couple years back i caught a homer run ball by Tyler Green before a Phillies game. I believe it was the first old-timers homerun derby. If i'm not mistaken the other competitors were Mitch Williams, Ricky Jordan and hell I forgot the fourth guy. Anyways, the ball broke one of my fingers. How embarrassing Tyler Green of all people hit a ball out of the yard hard enough to break one of my fingers.
