Halladay to the Phillies Would be Flippin’ Sweet

Posted by Kieran Kelly On July - 8 - 2009

All of the talking heads on the major sports networks, mostly Buster Olney and Ken Rosenthal, have been discussing the Blue Jays and the situation they are in with their ace Roy Halladay.

The Blue Jays are pretty much out of the race in the AL East at this point and have the best pitcher in baseball on their roster. With Halladay only signed through next season, they’re beginning to listen to offers for Doc.

Obvious destinations would seem to include the Red Sox and Yankees, but I highly doubt that the Jays would want to trade Halladay to their division rivals. The Mets don’t have enough prospects to land a pitcher of his caliber. With his no trade clause, Halladay also controls where he goes, if he goes anywhere.

Now, who does that leave? Oh right, the WFC Philadelphia Phillies. Not only have they been actively looking for a top of the rotation pitcher, but they have the prospects and depth in order to pull this off. If the Jays just let Halladay walk next season, they’ll get 2 first round picks as compensation, so they’ll be looking for solid young prospects in order to move him. The Phillies have plenty of plyaers like that.

Jason Donald, Michael Taylor, Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown, Lou Marson, Carlos Carrasco…the list goes on. I for one wouldn’t mind giving up a few of them in order to land Halladay. It would be tough to trade Drabek, and I’d hate to lose a potential stud like he may pan out to be, but if it means landing Halladay, hell, give Toronto the whole Lehigh Valley roster. Toronto may even look for a somewhat established major league pitcher like J.A. Happ as well. Let them have him. He’s got a lot of upside, but this team is built to win now, not a few years from now.

I think Ruben Amaro is going to do everything possible to land a pitcher like Halladay. The team has been linked to trade rumors for Halladay for the past few seasons, and they’re really starting to heat up now. If Amaro knows what’s best for this team, he’ll do whatever it takes to get Doc Halladay.

A rotation of Hamels, Halladay, Happ, Blanon, and Moyer looks pretty good to me. Get it done Ruben.
