While I was on vacation this past weekend, I received some shocking news.

Chris Coste was designated for assignment by the Phillies and claimed by that evil man Ed Wade. The move was made to clear up a roster spot for Raul Ibanez coming off the disabled list. I’m still baffled as to why the Phillies kept Paul Bako instead of Coste, but I guess Amaro had his reasons.

Anyways, I haven’t had a chance to put down my thoughts on the situation until now. I’ve decided to write a letter to Chris. Read on if you care.

Dear Mr. Coste,

Ever since your incredible spring training of 2006, I have been your biggest fan. You had a storybook tale, how could someone not become a fan? When you were left off the opening day roster, I felt as if a major injustice had occurred. Thankfully, you were called up and stayed put. I was also disappointed that you didn’t get put on the roster to start ’07 either, but you eventually found your way and stuck around full time.

I have always loved your determination. I guess that is why I became a fan of yours as soon as you came up with the Phillies.  Everyone that knows me knows that I’m a huge Coste fan. I’ve ben ridiculed in the past, but when I had a chance to buy a 2008 WFC Phillies shirsey, I picked your name and number.  I was very proud that you got a start in the World Series and got that opportunity.

It’s going to be very difficult to realize that the backup catcher is someone other than yourself. Bako got a sweet game winning hit the day after your release, but he still sucks. You’re better than him and I’m sure you know that.

It’s a difficult situation for you in Houston with two established catchers, but this will give you a chance to show your versatility. I’m hoping you can stick around with a major league club and continue your incredible journey thus far.

You can be sure that I’ll be rocking my Coste shirt as long as I can manage to wear it.

Good luck in Houston.

    You forgot, “Love, Kieran.”

I respect the sacrifices Coste made to get here (I enjoyed his book), but what's with Philly's love for mediocre backup catchers? First Fasano, now this.

Thanks. haha. I knew I was going to draft a letter to him, but I didn't know how it would turn out. Whatever, I'll miss him. Plain and simple.

I was going to put “Love” at the end, but figured I'd back off the man love for a bit.

I never got into the whole Sal Fasano thing. I just think people in Philly got behind Coste because of his background and story. He never gave up to get to the majors and finally made it. Philly loves a good underdog story.
