I know it seems a bit ridiculous but dammit we’ve got a theme going here at PhinallyPhilly and I’ll be damned if I don’t join the fun. You may be asking yourself “how can I get pumped up about the Sixers?” It may look bleak now, but focus has been lost on the positive parts of this team.
Lets not forget this is a playoff team. They gave the eventually Eastern Conference Champs all they could handle. And they did all of this without Elton Brand.
Think the Elton Brand signing was a bust? Let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. Brand will be fully healthy come training camp, along with a new head coach who has a system that tailors to him. Make no mistake the Sixers will still be a running team, but now they’ll also be able to play strong offensive half-court Basketball as well. Neither Tony DiLeo nor Maurice Cheeks had much of an offensive system. You now have a head coach who has installed a multi-layered offense. One which turned average players in Washington into All-stars.
The roster may not be one that can contend in the East but it’s certainly a building block towards the future. The idea is to not get pumped up about the Sixers chances this year but the fact that this is the beginning of the turn around. This is the team, the core group,and it will continue to be the core group for years to come.
I know it’s bad now, but every Philly team goes through this. Remember how bad the Phillies were only a few years back? Now they could be on their way to back-to-back World Series titles. Remember how bad the Eagles were before Andy Reid took over? Now they’re the “gold standard” and basically the owners of the city. Hell, remember the Flyers last place finish only three seasons ago? Now we’re back to the times where getting knocked out in the 1st round is unacceptable.
For the Sixers there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
So don’t forget what kind of excitement you can see down at the Wachovia Center:
