Lidge is the Phillies’ closer. Period.

Posted by Kieran Kelly On August - 12 - 2009

I can see it coming, the calls for Ryan Madson as closer are starting to build again. We’ve been down this road before. Let’s just pause that again.

We all got spoiled last year with Brad Lidge and his season of perfection. He was just unstoppable last season. There is no denying that.

This season, total opposite. Lidge has actually looked mortal, and has been knocked around a few times, most recently last night against the Cubbies. The Fightins’ came back to save him, with a Ben Francisco home run in extra innings to get Lidge off the hook.

So far this season, Lidge has blown 7 of his 28 save opportunities.  25% is ridiculous for a top of the line closer.  He has been bothered by injuries all season, and that has obviously contributed to his lace of success.

I also think the Phillies’ ability to string together a consistent streak has hurt him. Lidge has asked to get his work in on days in which the Phillies end up losing sometimes. Last week against the Marlins, in a spot in which he had no business pitching, he gave up 3 runs. I just don’t think closers should be put in a game unless it’s a save situation, a tie game, or down by one. That’s it.  Closers have a certain mentality when coming into a game. When coming into a game in which they’re just getting work takes them off of their routine.

Lidge has done this numerous times so far this season, and I think that has also contributed to him blowing a quarter of his save opportunities.

Brad Lidge is the closer for this team and everyone knows it. Madson may be a closer in the future, but not now. Brett Myers may come back soon, but let’s not go and pencil him in as a closer. He may play a valuable part out of the bullpen, but it won’t be as the closer.

Charlie Manuel will say all day today that Lidge is his man, but he shouldn’t have to. Lidge is the closer in Philadelphia. Period.

id like to know if people's comments are the same after last night.
  • Lidge struggled in '06 following the Pujols NLCS homer. What he's doing now can't be classified as a "funk" or anything that he'll be able to get out of this season.

What are we accomplishing by keeping Lidge in there? Do you expect him to all of the sudden lock in and give us a sub-4.00 ERA from here on out as our closer? What is our best case scenario at this point with him? Is that scenario better than what a guy like Park or Madson could give us?

I think all of this "give Lidge more time" stuff makes no sense. It's August. Since when does a major league player need more than four months to find his arm slot? When can we officially say Lidge doesn't have it this year and name someone else the closer?

@billgraffssweatervest: no way we make the playoffs if lidge blows saves down the homestretch of the regular season. We have by no means run away with a playoff spot just yet so don't get ahead of yourself. Lidge can possibly cost us a playoff spot, let alone a playoff win.
  • The only reason Lidge is still ATTEMPTING to close is because the Phillies have no one else at the moment. Lidge is a complete liability this year, last year is history. There is no way the Phillies advance in the playoffs with Lidge closing. Period.

I agree. There should be no more discussion (for now) regarding the closer position. Considering what he did last season, he gets a mulligan for the remainder of the regular season. It's only fair. HOWEVER, he blows one (1) save in the Playoffs, and it's "Closer by Committee." To boost his confidence, Charlie should do what he has done a few times earlier in the season. He should give Lidge the ball with 1 or 2 outs. At least if he walks the 1st guy he faces, he can get bailed out with a double play.
  • While I definitely agree that Ryan Madson is not the answer, I don't think Lidge is necessarily it either anymore. We are coming down the homestretch with a much smaller lead then we'd like and I don't know that we can count on Lidge in tight games anymore.

Is Myers the solution? I don't know. He's certainly the only other pitcher on the Phillies staff I'd even consider at this point, and who knows where his head is at.

I think if Amaro can land Heath Bell or Matt Capps, or a guy like that, then he needs to get it done. I'm as big a Lidge fan as there is, but at some point we all need to admit to what's been staring us in the face for a couple months now: the Pujols Lidge appears to be back.
