Phillies lead MLB in attendance

Posted by Kieran Kelly On August - 16 - 2009

Picture 4.jpgAs the report on ESPN.com shows, your 2008 WFC Philadelphia Phillies lead all of major league baseball in average attendance at home.

Give yourselves a hand.

When looking at these results, make sure to note that this is average attendance in terms of capacity. Simply put, we Phillies’ fans fill up the Bank more than any other team fills up their park. The Boston Red Sox had been in the lead for a good part of the season, but the Phillies have recently overtaken them. That’s pretty impressive, considering that the Red Sox have sold out Fenway Park for about 5 years in a row now, but their park is a bit smaller than CBP.

In terms of total attendance at home, the Fightins’ drop to third, behind the Yankees and Dodgers with over 2.5 million fans already through the gates at CBP this season. I’m sure they’ll pass 3 million fans easily this season.

Even on the road the Phillies are a good draw, as you can clearly see on any television broadcast of an away game. There are always tons of Phillies fans at opposing stadiums. I’m sure winning the World Series last season helped, but the Phillies have always seemed to draw pretty well on the road. Having players such as Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins will do that for a club.

The afterglow of a World Series championship has obviously been a major factor in helping attendance this season, but Phillies’ fans are loyal. Yes, there have been a lot of bandwagoners this season, but welcome aboard, nice to finally see you.

Let’s keep it up through the rest of the season. The all time attendance record was set just last year, with 3,422,583 going through the turnstiles at Citizens Bank Park. We’re less than a million away at this point with 24 home games remaining. I think we can do it.

Of course you sort by the one the Phillies are #1. If you go by total attendance, #1 Yankees, #2 Dodgers, #3 Phillies.

When different stadiums have different capacities, average attendance is the only way to compare how well a team is drawing compared to another.

Yankee Stadium is bigger than CBP, so of course the Yankees are going to draw more, but the Phillies have a higher average per game than the Yanks. Don't even get started on the Dodgers. Show up in the 3rd, leave by the 7th. Still true, even with Manny.

Then you should change the title to “Phillies Lead MLB in Percentage Attendance of Capacity” or SOMETHING similar. You can't say they lead the league in total attendance. Phillies are also #3 in average attendance per game of total # of people. The ONLY category they lead in is percentage of the stadium they fill. Of course you would use the only statistic the Phillies lead in to skew your article title. Also, not a Dodgers fan, but, do you watch Dodgers games? Their fans are notorious for staying for 4 innings but from what i read that has largely reversed.

Never did I mention that the Phillies led the league in total attendance. It doesnt' say that at all.

Of course I'm going to use the category in which the Phillies lead. This isn't “Phinally New York” or “Phinally LA.” It's Phinally Philly. We're going to write posts that cater to the Philly fan.

And I think the average attendance is the best factor in which to compare attendance figures across the league. The Yankees have a bigger park, so they could draw a smaller % than the Phillies and still have a higher total attendance total. Comparing the average attendance in a team's home ballpark gives a great indicator of how well that team is drawing.

And yes, I've watched a few Dodgers games this season. I'd disagree that the trend has reversed. They still show up late and leave early. And when Manny was suspended? forget about it, they all but abandoned the team. Dodgers' fans are a joke and most people know it.

No one reads the post anymore. They just see the title and the pretty picture and comment away.

If they took in extra minute to read the entire post, they would have seen that you said the Phillies are third in total attendance.
