As the report on ESPN.com shows, your 2008 WFC Philadelphia Phillies lead all of major league baseball in average attendance at home.
Give yourselves a hand.
When looking at these results, make sure to note that this is average attendance in terms of capacity. Simply put, we Phillies’ fans fill up the Bank more than any other team fills up their park. The Boston Red Sox had been in the lead for a good part of the season, but the Phillies have recently overtaken them. That’s pretty impressive, considering that the Red Sox have sold out Fenway Park for about 5 years in a row now, but their park is a bit smaller than CBP.
In terms of total attendance at home, the Fightins’ drop to third, behind the Yankees and Dodgers with over 2.5 million fans already through the gates at CBP this season. I’m sure they’ll pass 3 million fans easily this season.
Even on the road the Phillies are a good draw, as you can clearly see on any television broadcast of an away game. There are always tons of Phillies fans at opposing stadiums. I’m sure winning the World Series last season helped, but the Phillies have always seemed to draw pretty well on the road. Having players such as Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins will do that for a club.
The afterglow of a World Series championship has obviously been a major factor in helping attendance this season, but Phillies’ fans are loyal. Yes, there have been a lot of bandwagoners this season, but welcome aboard, nice to finally see you.
Let’s keep it up through the rest of the season. The all time attendance record was set just last year, with 3,422,583 going through the turnstiles at Citizens Bank Park. We’re less than a million away at this point with 24 home games remaining. I think we can do it.
