Eagles-Jags Cheers and Jeers

A few cheers and jeers from the win over Jacksonville…

Cheer – Jason Avant, WR

Avant was all over the field, finishing with 5 catches for 92 yards. He showed good hands, and a knack for getting open at just the right time. There is no doubt he’ll have a prominent role in this offense.

Cheer – Kevin Kolb, QB

He recovered from a shaky start to lead the Eagles to a comeback win. That touchdown pass to Reggie Brown was a thing of beauty.

Jeer – Michael Vick, QB

Vick looked tentative to say the least in his first game back. He lacked any explosiveness on his one carry, where he clearly showed he was scared of getting hit as he ducked to the turf to avoid a hit. It’s obviously too early to doubt his effectiveness for the regular season, but there is another interesting storyline brewing here.

Vick came in for McNabb on several plays leading some to question whether he was knocking Donovan out of rhythm. McNabb didn’t deny it either. I hate to harp on the same thing over and over, but this is yet another reason the Eagles should have never signed Vick. Aside from the fact that he is a thug, of course. It’s going to be crucial that Andy, Marty and co. find a way to integrate Vick in to the offense without taking McNabb out of the game entirely, although I’m not sure I’m a fan of lining him out wide like he did several times last night. You’re just asking for a freak injury in that scenario.

Jeer – Jason Peters, OT

Peters took a false start penalty that killed an early drive, and looked shaky on the whole (though not as bad as Hugh Douglas might lead you to believe.) The Eagles didn’t make Peters one of the highest paid linemen in the league for this kind of performance, period.

Cheer – Jason Babin, DE

Babin should have a spot locked up on this team by now and he had another strong performance last night. He could end up being one of the more underrated signings for Birds if he keeps this up.

Cheer – Asante Samuel, DB

Samuel was all over the place, picking off a Garrard pass, forcing a fumble on the goalline, and narrowly missing another INT. He looked like he was in midseason form last night.

For more observations from that game philly.com has a couple nice recaps, one from Bird’s Eye View and another from Moving the Chains.

Asante was all over the place. That his he layed on what became the Holt touchdown was pretty sweet. Whatever the Eagles are paying that guy, he's still underpaid.
