Everyone knows the Phillies are in a funk right now, so I’ll leave that story to someone else.
I just wanted to draw attention to how well Jamie Moyer has pitched out of the bullpen since being bumped from the rotation. I don’t really think it was a demotion per se, just more of a “we have too many pitchers and want to let Pedro pitch a few.”
In his last three appearances prior to being pressed into starting after J.A. Happ couldn’t make the start, Moyer pitched 13.1 innings and went 2-1 to go along with 12 strikeouts and a 1.35 ERA.
In the emergency start in place of Happ, Jamie tossed 6 innings and gave up 2 runs to the Astros. After being told today that he was pitching, that isn’t a bad line at all for the old goat. Hell, that’s not a bad line for anybody.
Simply put, Jamie has been pitching extremely well since being moved out to the bullpen. Yes, he acted like a baby when he was put out there, and it looks like he has been using that as motivation when he pitches. Moyer will most likely start a game in each of the 2 doubleheaders coming up later on in September, so it’s great to see that he has been pitching so well as of late.
With all of the offensive struggles, the pitching is going to have to carry this team through the stretch run.
