Good Lord what an awful game…then again it’s hard to say we didn’t see this coming. A few thoughts from the beatdown…
- I thought Darren Sharper’s display after that late interception return for a touchdown was disgusting. Walking into the endzone, then repeatedly taunting the fans in a blowout. I’ll ignore the fact that he is half the player he used to be and just remind his worthless, old, injury-prone ass that karma is a bitch.
- Kevin Kolb had a decent game. He made some good reads, had some great moments (those two TD passes sure were pretty, and the drive down the field with one minute left in the first half was McNabb-esq), and did a solid job of beating the blitz. He has to cut down on the mistakes though as the three INTs really hurt. He may not get another start this season, but his value to the team and on the trade block definitely went up.
- Special teams play killed the Eagles today. Tons of penalties, poor punts from Rocca, and I’ll address Ellis Hobbs here in a minute. We better see improvement next week or Ted Daisher’s job should be in jeopardy.
- If I’m Andy Reid I give Brian Westbrook next week off. He was limping way too much for my liking today and LeSean McCoy looks ready for a bigger role. Plus the Chiefs are a lousy team, and it would give Westy two weeks to rest (remember, Week 4 is a bye.)
- The Saints may be the most overrated team in the league right now. They beat the Lions and a McNabb-less Eagles team, yet they were laughing and joking on the sideline after the Sharper INT like they are on the fast track to the Super Bowl. Call me bitter, but they have nothing resembling a defense and will have a hard time stopping opposing teams all season long. That matters come playoff time.
- Can we still trade Ellis Hobbs back to the Patriots? He is a mediocre kick returner and his fumble to start the second half killed any momentum the team had from that late 2nd quarter drive.
- The Eagles are going to need to get more pressure on elite QBs than they got on Drew Brees today. They had their moments (the forced fumble, and Jordan’s athletic INT come to mind) but they ultimately gave Brees way too much time to pick the secondary apart.
- Did Asante Samuel even play today? Complete non-factor out there. Same goes to Kevin Curtis on offense.
- The offensive line for the most part did a good job of giving Kolb time to throw. Winston Justice continues to impress me and seems to be improving with each passing week.
- The beginning of the end was when Kolb missed a wide open Desean Jackson on 3rd down late in the first half deep in their own territory. If that pass is completed the Eagles probably drive the field and score to take a halftime lead. Instead they punt, the Saints catch a break on a missed holding call on a long screen to Reggie Bush, and it all went downhill from there.
- By the way, that missed holding call was one of the worst non calls I’ve seen in a long time. The ref was standing right there watching an Eagles lineman get his head taken off as he was clearly being held back from a sure sack on Brees. Hell that could even be TWO penalties, holding and illegal use of hands to the face! Unacceptable mistake by the zebras. The NFL is so quick to fine players for criticizing refs, how about they fine refs for blowing obvious calls?!?
This is one of those games you really just have to let go. If the Eagles have McNabb they probably win this game, but at least they kept it close for a half. Time to look ahead to a very winnable Week 3 matchup with Kansas City, and hope McNabb and Westbrook are healthy. A minor speed bump for an Eagles team that still appears to be a serious contender in the NFC.
