News and Notes: the Flyers are ORANGE

Posted by Chris Shafer On September - 22 - 2009

I’m not quite sure what everyone’s missing. I’m pretty sure I announced a while ago that the Flyers would be wearing ORANGE as their home jersey this season. Don’t know who missed that memo, but I’ll go dig it up for you all:

So please, no more emails about the 3rd Jersey. There is no official word from the organization, but people have contacted Comcast asking about the change. Word is that the Flyers will be wearing the Orange Jersey for home games this season. That doesn’t mean it’s the only home jersey they will wear because I’m sure the black ones will be scheduled in. I expect it to be closer to 50/50 than last season, but for all intents and purposes the Philadelphia Flyers are once again, orange. If you don’t believe me check out the home jersey in NHL ’10 or figure out what the Flyers have been wearing in the preseason. Don’t forget the rookie scrimmage against the Capitals where the rooks came out in the “3rds.”

I also don’t know what white jersey the Flyers are going with. I assume the Reebok whites will be around, and you will see the retro whites for the Winter Classic. What I can almost assure is:

  1. You will see orange a LOT this season, not just 4-5 home games.
  2. The Flyers will wear four different sweaters over the course of the season.

There’s other news though: Examiner.com – Forgetting Kevin Marshall: Flyers ship kids home.

There are other interesting points on the return list as well. Tomas Sinisalo, who had a very strong rookie camp as an invitee, was sent to the Phantoms instead of being released. It’s possible that he gets an AHL contract. Jonathan Kalinski and Andreas Nodl, both of which spent time on the Flyers last season, have been sent back to the AHL. Tyler Hostetter of the OHL was invited to camp and then sent back to Erie with a three year entry-level contract. Mark Bell, a former 20-goal-scorer who the Flyers invited to camp, was let go. Paul Holmgren mentioned that the organization had seen enough of him to be confident in their decision to release him.

After performing so well with the Flyers during the preseason, especially on the penalty kill, it still remains likely that Blair Betts could walk away from camp with an NHL contract in Philadelphia. The following 19 players have been sent to the AHL affiliate Phantoms:

Josh Beaulieu, Rob Bellamy, Matt Clackson, Ryan Dingle, Jonathan Kalinski, Garrett Klotz, Jonathan Matsumoto, Andreas Nodl, Tomas Sinisalo, Oskars Bartulis, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Joonas Lehtivuori, Kevin Marshall, Mike Ratchuk, David Sloane, Logan Stephenson, Jeremy Duchesne, Nic Riopel, Michael Teslak.

The following 8 players have been sent back to their respective junior teams:

David Labrecque, Zac Rinaldo, Mike Thomas, Eric Wellwood, Tyler Hostetter, Brennan Yadlowski, Adam Morrison, Jacob DeSerres.

The following 2 players have been released from their try-outs:

Mark Bell, Adrian Foster.

The following 32 players are still active in Flyers’ training camp:

Arron Asham, Blair Betts, Danny Briere, Dan Caricllo, Jeff Carter, Riley Cote, Simon Gagne, Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Lukas Kaspar, Krys Kolanos, Ian Laperriere, Patrick Maroon, Darroll Powe, Mika Pyorala, Mike Richards, Jared Ross, Jason Ward, James van Riemsdyk, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, Sean Curry, Randy Jones, Joey Morimina, Ryan Parent, Chris Pronger, Danny Syvret, Kimmo Timonen, Ole-Kristian Tollefsen, Johan Backlund, Brian Boucher, Ray Emery.

Since that article was written Krys Kolanos, Jared Ross, Joey Mormina, and Sean Curry cleared waivers to join the Phantoms as well. The expected lineup for tonight’s home preseason game against the Red Wings looking something like this:

Gagne – Richards – Kaspar
Hartenll – Carter – Briere
van Riemsdyk – Giroux – Pyorala
Carcillo – Powe – Ward

Timonen – Coburn
Pronger – Carle
Parent – Syvret

Emery
Boucher

In the quest for a roster spot the team is shaping up a lot like the following despite random placements for tonight’s game:

Gagne – Richards – xxx
Hartnell – Carter – xxx
xxx – Giroux – Briere
yyy – yyy – yyy
yyy

Timonen – Coburn
Pronger – Carle
Parent – zzz
zzz

Emery
Boucher

*letter denotes position battle. In order of likelihood of receiving a position:

xxx = Pyorala, van Riemsdyk, (Powe), (Laperriere), Kaspar, (Carcillo), Maroon, Laliberte

yyy = Laperriere, Powe, Asham, Betts, Carcillo, Cote, Ward

zzz = Jones, Tollefsen, Syvret

Things to look for tonight:

  1. All five legit defenders (Pronger, Timonen, Coburn, Carle, Parent) will be on the ice tonight. They need to show what they can do as one of the best units in the NHL on paper.
  2. Syvret needs to perform well and steal Jones’ job as that 6th guy. My future in alcoholism and the team’s salary cap depends on it.
  3. Gagne will be in for his preseason debut.
  4. Kaspar has to play well with Richards and Gagne.
  5. Giroux needs to show he can be the man on that line controlling JVR and Pyorala.
  6. Carcillo needs to not do stupid things.
  7. Emery, as always, needs to be at his best.

Thank god! Those black jerseys were boring and didn't represent the Flyers (IMHO). It seemed like just a quick cheap attempt the capitalize on the black jersey craze a few years ago.

I'm so glad the Flyers are wearing more orange this year. I just wish that the retro orange wasn't so bright!
