The Flyers seem to have hit a minor snag during contract negotiations with camp invitee, Blair Betts. While the waiving
of Randy Jones has sparked all kinds of assumptions that the orange and black were going to welcome a new number 11 to the club, terms of a contract have yet to be reached. According to sources that there are differences in both money and length. The fourth line center, face-off wizard, and penalty kill extraordinaire would be very useful to the Flyers this season. Betts would allow the team to rest players like Gagne and Carter more on the penalty kill, but Holmgren and Stevens are not above letting the talented penalty-killer walk. Throughout the preseason Coach Stevens has made it clear that he likes Darroll Powe centering Dan Carcillo and Ian Laperriere on the fourth line. Betts would be a useful forward to add but is not going to make or break a championship.
If the contract Betts is seeking is over a million in cap hit per season, regardless of the length, it could cause a whole host of problems with injury this season. Many expected the center to sign for around $0.600 million. The Flyers were already forced to call up goaltender Johan Backlund in relief of Brian Boucher who is out for a week or so due to injury.
The opening day roster was due today, and based on all reports, the Flyers submitted a 22-man team without Betts. That does not mean he is a lost cause though since there is still time to add him after the season begins. Contract negotiations have been rough according to reactions from Paul Holmgren, but both sides are hoping that a deal can be worked out.
