12 year old girl gets greedy, robs Ryan Howard of milestone HR ball

Posted by Kieran Kelly On October - 8 - 2009

Howard200HR.jpgBack in July, the Phillies’ Ryan Howard reached a huge milestone in his career.

He hit his 200th career home run, becoming the quickest player in major league history to do so. He hit his 200th HR in his 658th game, beating Ralph Kiner’s record of 706.

Howard’s historic home run ball was caught by a 12 year old girl at Miami’s Landshark Stadium. Knowing the significance of the home run, a representative of the Phillies immediately went to her and escorted her to the Phillies’ clubhouse, where she exchanged the home run ball for an autographed one from RyHo.

From Fox29 in Philly:

“‘Could we have the ball? We’ll give you something back, anything,’” recounts Valdivia. “I’m like, ‘Okay, can I have a baseball signed by Ryan Howard?’”

Later, apparently after finding out the financial value of the ball, the girl’s mother sued the Phillies, seeking return of the ball. This woman is a perfect example of what is wrong with our country. Once she found out it could be worth money, she wanted it back. She had no problem taking the autographed ball back in July, but now wants the one that is worth a lot more money.

This just reinforces the lesson that many parents seem to be teaching their kids these days: If you don’t get what you want, sue.

Now, I’m sure the Phillies could have prevailed if this case actually went to court, but it wouldn’t have been worth the negative publicity.

People like this just make it so hard to feel bad for her. She got greedy, sued to get her way, and got what she wanted. That’s quickly becoming the new American dream.

Ok. While Howard got millions, someone wants something and she is a bad person. I hold a one of a kind stuff of a well known player (multiple gold glove winner). This stuff it was part of player´s childhood and he did not know the existence of the item. So, I suposse I should give to him, who got over $60.000.000 in his career and just expect a smile from him.

Please. It's just a game used ball to this girl. To Ryan Howard it represents years of hard work. While I don't agree with someone lying to the girl in an effort to recover Ryan Howard's homerun ball, the family should have yielded when they discovered it was a milestone baseball. For them to sure to get the ball back is a total joke. The girl got an autographed Ryan Howard baseball for crying out loud. I'd like to have one of those.

Figures you're a blinded Philly fan...from an unbiases article... and, excuse me, the girl is 12 and was duped. That's why kids can't vote till they're 18. They haven't matured enough to make a decision like that especially not knowing all the facts.

Jennifer has no plans to sell. She keeps the ball in her room, hidden near her bunk so friends can't take it.

"When I grow up and everything, I'm going to show it to my kids," said Jennifer, who wants to be a pediatrician. "Then, they're going to tell their kids, and their kids are going to tell their other kids."

  • I'm no blinded Philly fan, I'm can see clearly. The Phillies are getting screwed with this. All of this publicity that is coming out makes it seem like the Phillies are the bad guy in this scenario.

She got a different ball, autographed by Ryan Howard himself. Let Ryan have his milestone ball. What does that specific ball mean to her? To Ryan, it means a lot. He broke a long standing MLB record with that ball.

To tell you the truth, I don't believe a word that girl says. Of course she has not plans to sell.....now. Not after dragging the Phillies through the mud. She'll wait until the commotion dies down and then when RyHo is going for the HOF, then the ball will all of a sudden appear for sale.

This is nothing but a money grab by the girl's family. Plain and simple.

Why is everyone under the delusion that the Phillies organization gave her the "200th" home run ball back? RyHo has the ball at his house and the Philllies probably just gave her a scoffed up batting practice ball. This girls mother is totally c*nt :)

Actually, the Phillies couldn't have prevailed in court due to contract law with regards to minors. Minors can break a contract at any time, since you cannot legally enter into a contract directly with a minor. You may only due so with a guardian and from what I've been reading on this story, there was no guardian present. Contract law is written up in order to prevent things like this from happening. Of course the little girl isn't going to ask for much. She has no concept of fair value. The Phillies should have compensated her in proportion to the estimated value of the ball, but instead they only gave her a signed ball.
  • You should probably change your headline. It wasn't the 12 year old girl who got greedy, it was her good-for-nothing mother.
  • I agree that the mother was the root cause, but the 12 year old still clearly stated "I got my ball back." That ball was hers until she traded it for a different one.

The girl herself got greedy, as well as her mother, but that goes hand in hand.
