Back at the end of August, the Phillies had the greatest giveaway in their history.
Giving away a Carlos Ruiz chest protector backpack was brilliant. There was only one catch though, it was limited to kids 14 and under. I was heartbroken.
However, to my surprise, a few weeks later, on the day the Phillies would end up clinching the NL East, a vendor was giving the backpacks away with the purchase of a game program. I’ve never parted with $10 quicker.
Seeing as how the Phillies won that game, I made sure to have the backpack ready to go when I made the trip down to CBP for the game against the Dodgers last night.
Of course, the backpack came through again. I got a few odd looks and stares, but hell with them, the Phillies got the win.
Chooch himself went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, but that was just the start of the offense. Jimmy Rollins went 1-5 with a double and an RBI. Shane Victorino went 2-3 with a HR and 3 RBIs. Chase Utley went 2-4 with a run scored. Ryan Howard went 1-4 with a rare triple and 3 RBIs. Jayson Werth had a towering shot to deep centerfield for a 2 run HR.
The offense was spectacular, and with a performance like that, not much is needed from the pitcher. Cliff Lee didn’t even need the offense though. He threw 8 shutout innings, only giving up 3 hits and no walks while striking out 10 Dodgers, including a huge one of Manny Ramirez.
The Phillies are hitting on all cylinders right now and it’s beautiful to watch. This team is scary good and can compete with anyone. If the offense saved some runs for Heavy B in Game 4, the Phillies should be going for the series win on Wednesday with Cole Hamels on the mound.
