For the 2nd time this postseason, the Phillies were down to their last out and came back to win the game with 2 outs.
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, facing Dodgers’ closer Jonathon Broxton, all-time Dodger killer Matt Stairs worked a four pitch walk. Then, Mr. Choochtober himself, Carlos Ruiz, got hit by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Greg Dobbs lined out to third pinch-hitting for Brad Lidge, bringing up Jimmy Rollins.
Coming into tonight, Rollins was 7-33 in the postseason with only 1 RBI. He was due.
He must have known it. Rollins smoked a ball to right center to score Eric Bruntlett, pinch running for Stairs, from 2nd and Chooch scored from first.
Hell of a way to end the game. Kind of lost in all of the excitement was Ryan Howard tying Lou Gehrig’s record of at least one RBI with eight straight. Chase Utley also reached base 24 straight times in the postseason, one short of Boog Powell’s record of 25.
This Phillies team is simply awesome. I’ll end with something I never thought I’d see written, from Duk, of Big League Stew:
I think most baseball fans follow their teams in hopes they’ll one day get to follow a team like the Phillies. What a run they’re on.
