In slightly less than 72 hours, the city of Philadelphia will experience something that has never happened before.
The Philadelphia Phillies will be representing the Senior Circuit in the World Series for the 2nd year in a row.
127 seasons of Phillies baseball, and the Phillies have never made repeat trips to the Fall Classic, until this magical season.
First trip in 1915 was followed by a 2nd appearance 35 years later, with the Whiz Kids in 1950.
Simply put, this Phillies’ franchise likes to take it’s sweet time between World Series appearances.
With the recent resurgence of professional sports’ all-time losingest franchise, it seems as if Philadelphia won’t have to wait nearly as long between NL pennants from now on.
There has been much discussion in the local media about whether this team is the best in Philly sports history, all sports considered. The 1983 Sixers were before my time, but I’ve heard they were pretty good. The 2004 Eagles were very good as well. I honestly remember thinking that the Birds were finally going to win a Super Bowl and the city of Philadelphia would explode.
This team, and as noted in the linked article above, the 2008 version, are pretty much thought of as one unit. Most of the same players are still there. I still think it’s possible to say that the `09 version is a better team than their `08 counterparts. With last season’s experience, this year’s team just knows how to win, and it shows.
The entire country is starting to notice the Phillies, and it’s only going to get better with the World Series. Facing the Yankees would give a feel-good story to the Series and pretty much put the entire country on the Phillies’ side.
Winning the Series on the other hand would take away away all that stupid talk about the WS win in `08 being a fluke.
This Phillies team is good. Simply put. I can’t wait until this country finally realizes that and gives them the respect they rightfully deserve.
It’s going to be awesome.
