Myers in, Miggy out on eve of World Series

Posted by Kieran Kelly On October - 27 - 2009

MyersCelebrating.jpgThe Phillies finalized their roster for the World Series today, leaving it the same with the exception of two players.

Brett Myers was added and Miguel Cairo was dropped.

The move makes sense on a few levels. With at least two games taking place in Yankee Stadium, where the designated hitter will be in effect, creates more of a need for pitchers than it does hitters. Plus, Cairo wasn’t really used all that much. There are better pinch-running options and Eric Bruntlett and Greg Dobbs can carry the utility and pinch-hitter roles more than adequately.

Myers struggled a bit in the NLDS, but seemed to be throwing pretty well in workouts the past week, according to team officials. Brett pitched against the Yankees back in May and went 8 innings, giving up 3 ER on 8 hits while getting the win.

Having too many pitchers can never be a bad thing. Charlie Manuel has managed in the American League before, so he knows how to make the necessary moves with the DH in effect. Having enough pitchers to make these moves is critical, and this move gives Cholly one more pitcher to play with.
