Yay or Nay?: The Sons of Ben’s “You suck, asshole!” chant.

Posted by Zolo the Trollo On July - 20 - 2010

In the short time that the Philadelphia Union has been around, the Sons of Ben have made their presence known. Hell, they were making their presence known all over MLS even before Philly had a team.

With six home games under their belt, the SOBs are starting to become more and more organized in their chants and songs.  (Little disclaimer: I am a member of the group and do sit in the supporter’s section, but I’m a rookie.) The group is getting louder and louder and gets recognition on TV at least a few times a game. It’s a great thing to see the group growing.

However, one chant in particular has seemed to rile a few feathers. I’ll let the video show you.

I think it’s all harmless fun and you’ll hear much worse language at any other sporting event in Philly. The fact that this chant has a couple thousand people yelling “asshole” at the same time is what’s likely bothering some people.

This had led to an active discussion over at the Sons of Ben section on the Big Soccer forums. While the foul language is one issue, it seems that the lack of originality is a big factor as well. As the SOBs get more experience, I’m sure there will be more original chants, but for the time being, simple chants like this will get more involved.

When it comes down to it, I think it’s all just simple fun and people in the other parts of the stadium seem to get a little chuckle at the fact that 2,000+ are calling the GK an asshole.

By Philly standards, it’s pretty tame, in my opinion, what do you think?

Thanks for the link to my video. I was wondering why I was getting more comments on it. And I love this chant. Cracked me up everytime.

I was indifferent until I realized the number of kids and families at games. At the end of the day it is a Union game not an SOB game. There are 15000 other people at the stadium.

    i love it.

I heard this when seeing Union play Man United a few weeks ago and found it tacky. Heard it again at the Barclay's New York Challenge and found it even more tacky. Maybe periodically in response to a player's gaffe, but unconditionally when some of the best footballers these people will ever see are on the pitch just proves it's more about the dubious pleasure of cursing loudly and in unison in public than anything else.

Fun and funny for those lacking fun and funny elsewhere in life.

I think it's comical and harmless, there's probably worse going on in half of the video games that kids are playing at home these days. It's also on the tame side for Philly fans, ever go to an Eagles or a Flyers game! Get over it.

dude arent we at these games to have fun?i havent missed a game at PPL yet but took a friend for his first game (river end, natch!). didnt warn him and he almost fell over first time gk kicked ball. SOBs are solid group (see website). kids are going to hear way worse elsewhere if they havent already. chill

I have an 8 and 5 year old and went to a recent game (that was not sold out). After hearing this chant, we won't be going again. If the Sons of Ben want a successful soccer team including sold out games, they should make it kid friendly and avoid the profanity.

hey i have kids as well and i think they have all heard the word before please do not stop going to games because of this its overall a great time
